Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard

We are launching a cross-industry initiative to develop the UK's first Net Zero Carbon Building Standard. This initiative has been led by UKGBC, BBP, BRE, Carbon Trust, CIBSE, IStructE, LETI, RICS, RIBA who with others will be coordinating the development of this standard.

The initiative is collaboratively led by industry bodies and organisations with extensive knowledge and influence in the built environment sector, aiming to develop the reference guidance for robust net zero claims for single assets, backed by science.

The work will be available for consultation at various stages of its development, with the target completion date being at the end of 2022

Sign up to be involved

There are various ways of getting involved in this standard, either through participating in one of the Task Groups, the sector groups, which will be developing sector specific targets, providing data on operational energy and embodied carbon or supporting with other roles, such as coordination and project management.

  • Apply to be part of the Task Groups

  • Apply to be part of the sector groups or support by providing data on operational energy and embodied carbon of buildings

  • Apply to support with other roles, such as coordination and project management.

  • Sign up to be an early adopter (Open for inventors and developers)

  • Sign up to the mailing list - so that you hear about  (link to page)

You can apply to get involved either as an individual or an organization.

About

More detail on the Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard

The Net Zero Carbon Buildings standard will set out the requirements for achieving and verifying a built asset as net zero carbon in the UK market. It will be applicable to new and existing buildings, not infrastructure.

The standard will set out the metrics by which net zero carbon performance is evaluated, as well as the performance targets, or limits, that need to be met. These are likely to include energy use, upfront embodied carbon, lifecycle embodied carbon and space heating/cooling demand criteria. It will also cover the treatment of residual emissions, including the approach to procuring renewables and carbon offsetting.

Who is it for?

The output will be for developers, contractors, asset owners and managers, investors, financiers and funders, consultants, building industry professionals, building managers and manufacturers. It is for anyone who wants to either fund, procure, design or specify a Net Zero Carbon Building and anyone wanting to demonstrate that their building is 'Net Zero'-aligned with an industry-agreed standard.

Align with science-based trajectories to achieve net zero

The project will focus on the UK but may be applicable to a wider context.  It will align with the UK's Net Zero 2050 Target and 78% reduction 2035 Target, as well as the carbon budgets set by the Climate Change Committee, which  indicate the contribution buildings need to make to our national decarbonisation. Performance targets will align with science-based trajectories needed to achieve net zero by 2050.
